Reviews: There is an element of trust that exists between you and your mechanic, like the mystical bond between the Duke boys and Cooter. When that trust is betrayed ??? well, you write a review like this one. I have owned 5 new cars in my lifetime, and this has been the only time I have ever had a routine service that cost more than the car payment itself. Big Two Toyota of Chandler, AZ, in their quest to offset the mortgage on that beautiful new garage complex with fresh cookies and a rock climbing wall, has decided that my 30,000 mile service should cost??? Wait for it??? $600. Now I know what the ???Big Two??? are ??? solid brass. To be fair, there was more service done. The service rep called mid-afternoon and said, ???Hey, you need to flush your brake fluid and your steering fluid, and you have carbon scoring in your injectors.??? (Carbon scoring? Like an R2 unit accumulates during a blaster battle?) I asked how much would the service cost now. ???$250??? came the immediate reply. Although I could hear the Jiffy Lube Sales Pitch in his voice, I agreed to the service, mostly out of curiosity. We arrived at the service department later that afternoon, eager to get our car back and start packing it up for our road trip to San Diego. Now, a reasonable person would then expect the final bill to be, oh, somewhere between $250 and a little more than $250. When the bill came over the service counter, even the cashier gasped. In fact, even before I had a finger on it, she was already asking me ???would you like to talk to the service rep???? Then I saw it ??? six??? hundred??? dollars. Now, I have the 25,000 mile service bill next to me as I write this, and that total was $62, all told. The only difference that I see is that this time they changed the spark plugs and ???lubricated the propeller shaft???. Apparently, they itemize that euphemism now. At the cashier station, I had a long, earnest talk with the service rep, which to other customers made him look like Jim Cantore buffeted by Hurricane Rita at high tide. Essentially, my point was this: in this hand, I hold the Holy Toyota Service Booklet, which hath all of the service you guys were planning to do at each mileage checkpoint. Since I can???t trust Big Two to do this service at a reasonable cost, I will simply ask for the same service at a different garage. Most of the smaller garages use the same exact parts and read the same exact bulletins as the shiny new megagarages. And if you want a cookie, they have Otis Spunkmeyer in the vending machine. I concluded with him that in my view, it just doesn???t make sense to pay the premium rate at a dealership when a reputable local garage can do it at 1/8 the price, and you can actually talk to the guy who did the work. Sorry, but I bought a new car because I didn???t want high maintenance costs. And now that you stung me once, what did you expect me to do, come back in 5,000 miles expecting something different? Grow up. I think I can manage taking my car in for an oil change without Big Two holding my hand and giving me a cookie.
